FAQs
Can I get contraception prescriptions at the pharmacy?
Yes, pharmacies often offer contraception assessments and can prescribe certain forms of hormonal birth control, such as birth control pills or emergency contraception, depending on provincial regulations. During the consultation, the pharmacist reviews your medical history and lifestyle factors, such as smoking or migraines, to determine the most suitable contraceptive option. They then prescribe it as appropriate, counsel you on usage and side effects, and provide follow-up support. This service increases accessibility to contraception without needing a doctor's visit.
Is this service covered by insurance or health plans?
Minor ailments and contraception assessments are covered under provincial health programs or extended healthcare benefits, depending on eligibility. In some cases, costs are fully or partially reimbursed. If not covered, there still be a nominal consultation fee. The pharmacy team can help you determine your coverage, explain any out-of-pocket costs, and assist you in navigating available provincial programs to support these essential healthcare services affordably.
How long does an assessment take, and do I need an appointment?
Assessments typically require 15–30 minutes, depending on the complexity of the ailment or contraception needs. Many pharmacies, including Langford, offer both scheduled and walk-in appointments. Scheduling ensures a private, uninterrupted consultation, while walk-ins are accommodated when possible. The pharmacist will take time to gather your history, discuss symptoms or birth control goals, make recommendations, and provide clear follow-up instructions for a truly patient-centered experience.
What if my symptoms are more serious than a minor ailment?
If the pharmacist determines that your symptoms indicate a more serious condition—such as persistent fever, severe abdominal pain, or possible infection—they will advise you to seek immediate care from a doctor or emergency services. Their role is to ensure patient safety and avoid under-treatment of serious ailments. They also liaise directly with a healthcare provider on your behalf to facilitate appropriate follow-up treatment and ensure continuity of care.
