What is Shingles?

Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus behind chickenpox. Years after recovering from chickenpox, the virus can reactivate, causing shingles—a blistering, burning rash often accompanied by nerve pain.

Common symptoms include:

  • Painful rash (usually on one side of the body)
  • Burning, tingling, or shooting pain
  • Blisters, fever, fatigue, or headache
  • Risk of long-term nerve pain (postherpetic neuralgia), vision issues, and more

Shingles can affect your quality of life for weeks—or longer. Vaccination is your best defence.

Who Should Get the Shingles Vaccine?

According to public health guidelines:

  • Adults 50 years and older should get the Shingrix® vaccine, whether or not they’ve had shingles before
  • Adults 19+ with weakened immune systems may also be eligible
  • Even if you received the older Zostavax®, Shingrix® is still recommended

We use Shingrix®, a highly effective two-dose vaccine offering over 90% protection against shingles and its complications.
  3. I’ve already had shingles. Should I still get the vaccine?
